New Delhi, Feb 2: In a significant development, the Union Cabinet which met under the chairmanship of Hon'ble Prime Minister approved rehabilitation package for the Dal dwellers worth Rs. 356 Cr., today. It is pertinent to mention here that the commitment for this package was made by the Hon'ble Prime Minister himself during his visit to the state of Jammu & Kashmir last year.
The Housing and Urban Development Department which administers Lakes and Waterways Development Authority, had taken up with Ministry of Environment and Forests, GoI for funding the compensation to be paid to the Dal Dwellers for acquisition of their land and structures within the Dal lake.
The project has now been cleared after its techno-financial justification.
The Deputy Chief Minister and Minister incharge of the Housing and Urban Development department sh. Tara Chand, who is in New Delhi and was pursuing sanctioning of this amount since it was taken up with the union govt. was pleased to share this information. In a brief statement from here, he has expressed his gratitude towards the Union Cabinet in general and Hon'ble Prime Minister in particular. He further stated that he was overwhelmed by the liberal attitude of the Union Government in extending financial assistance to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and it would not have been possible to take developmental initiatives in the State without the support of the Centre, for which the State was indebted to UPA Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi also.
The Deputy Chief Minister also thanked Union Health Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad who has always been espousing and pursuing such issues of the people of the State in New Delhi.
