‘Golf courses vandalize environment’ | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 2: Like his father, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also believes that promoting golf can promote tourism. After inaugurating Golf Courses at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sidra, the Chief Minister has plans to move to Leh for a similar venture. According to him, the exercise would attract golfers to the State to play in different environments during their stay in the three regions. Chairing 1st Governing Body meeting of Jammu Tawi Golf Course (JTGC) here today, the Chief Minister approved release of Rs. 3 crores for the development of the 9-holes Sidhra Golf Course to 18-holes. The Golf courses, for the information of the Chief Minister have wreaked havoc with the fragile environment of the state. According to environmental experts, the vandalization of the city forest in Srinagar to pave way for Royal Springs Golf Course will ultimately kill the world famous Dal Lake. "The city forest formed an important catchment for the lake and its destruction in the garb of promoting golf (a game that a few people play in the state) will adversely affect the lake." They have suggested ploughing of the golf course to save the lake. Gulmarg and Pahalgam are also fragile environmentally and so is Leh. Environmentalists have strongly resented the idea. Golf is rich man's game. The commoner in Jammu Kashmir cannot even dream of owning the costly equipment that required for the game. Of course it will attract a few tourists but can this state afford vandalism of the environment? |
