| Mufti asserts to widen PDP's role in Jammu region | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 2: While daughter Mehbooba Mufti is her party's Kashmir face fighting for "Kashmiri cause" in Kashmir region, father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed former chief minister and patron of People's Democratic Party with experience and patience at his command, is trying hard to dispel the negative image of his party in Jammu region at a time when congress party has become the casualty of mis-governance of NC led state government besides internal bickering and BJP's image has got tarnished due to cash-for- vote allegations against its legislators during legislative council elections last year.
The former chief minister Mufti Sayeed believes that Jammu people seek to have effective, free from corruption and accountable government while Kashmir politics is by and large dominated by the separatist politics which could be addressed with healing touch. However, Mufti, who is presently stationed in Jammu, now asserts to portray secular image of PDP after it suffered dent in image in Jammu region for playing for Kashmir politics during Amarnath land row in 2008.
"While state BJP leadership lost credibility by playing foul in legislative council elections last year, the congress party has become casualty of mis-governance of NC led government in Jammu region. The Jammu people concentrate on development and their economic stakes are more sharper than Kashmiris and as such they would definitely wish to find the party which provides corruption free and accountable government in the state," PDP patron Mufti said.
Mufti said, there are around seven assembly segments in and around Jammu city where people have not idolized any particular party. They simply vote for performance. They have vote even for independent candidates whom they feel, would take interest in the welfare of the people. "It was in RS Pura in Jammu when I won assembly elections in 1984 against RS Chib of NC. Surprisingly, RS Pura was not my birth place nor I had relations in the constituency but people there believed in performance and they voted for me," former CM recalled.
Spelling out his party's future plan, Mufti Sayeed is all set to organize public meetings across Jammu city and other districts like Kathua on February 7 to propagate his party's programme. "My dream is to see the state free of monolithic arrogant National conference. The NC leaders in an arrogant style govern the state and this has belittled honour and respect of people here," Mufti said.
PDP general secretary of Jammu region Thakur Balbir Singh of Bilawar in Kathua district says that Jammu people has understood that PDP is the party which is keen to get empowerment to the people of all three regions and its image of being Kashmir-centric party is getting washed away slowly. "People in Jammu have realized that PDP is a secular, regional party which talk of people's aspirations," Thakur, who was congress MLA from 1996 till 2002 said.
PDP could not win a seat in Jammu region during 2008 assembly elections while NC won three seats and surprisingly one from Vijaypura with two obviously from Muslim areas in Jammu. Congress has 14 MLA from Jammu, BJP 11 and Panthers party three seats while two seats are held by independents out of 37 seats in Jammu region.
A senior officer in J-K bank on anonymity said that the present state government only rear grudge and this made it to dislodge the former chairman of the bank in a jiffy without any concrete and reasonable charge and posted retired "cynical" former general manager of the bank as chairman of J-K bank.
There are allegations of corruption against almost all ministers except three still, the state government is silent and allow the system to get ruined with corruption, said Ajay Kumar Khajuria of Channi Himmat locality.
"But for Mehbooba Mufti's one-sided politics for Kashmir region only, Mufti Sayeed can be acceptable to the people of Jammu. He served as home minister of the country as well and he knows the delicacies of the homogenous country and state in particular," Ajay Khajuria said. |
