Would IGP take similar action if police role figures in firewood smuggling at Bhalwal | SI punished for wrong doings: | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Feb 02: IGP Dilbag Singh today punished incharge of Narwal police post for commiting irregularities, but would he take a similar action if the role of police was established in the unrestrained smuggling of firewood in and around Bhalwal nowadays? Narwal police post incharge, SI Hilal Mohammad Azhar was attached with district police lines (DPL) here for "failing to initiate legal action in complaints about the misappropriation of goods in a truck and the misuse of a seized vehicle". SP (south) Rajeshwar Singh was asked by the IGP to hold an inquiry into the incident and submit him the report. "Dilbag, taking a serious note of the irregularities committed by Azhar, attached him with the DPL with immediate effect and ordered an inquiry to be done by SP, south," police sources said. In a press statement, the IGP said such steps were necessitated to improve the work culture and bring transparency in the overall police functioning. His statement, however, came as a surprise to few in media because in the past, he had not bothered to initiate any action against erring cops, or if any action was taken by him, that was not made known to press. He had not felt the need of taking action against the guilty cops when a goldsmith's both shoulders were broken during his interrogation at Janipura police station. The goldsmith was tortured by the then SHO, Inspector Parihar after he had refused to wrongly accept his involvement in the purchase of stolen gold ornaments from thieves. Police wanted to make him main accused in the case. After his condition deteriorated in the lockup, he was released and no case was registered against him. All the expenses for the treatment of his broken shoulders were borne by the SHO himself. It was a more serious crime but the IGP had ironically not taken any notice of it. Nowadays, truck loads of firewood could be seen parked on the inner Kangar road at Bhalwal, waiting for the green signal of police to move to their destinations. Cut by smugglers from the nearby forests, this wood is smuggled to their destinations (factories and brick kilns) with impunity from law. The illegal felling of firewood at Bhalwal and its smuggling to different areas has flourished in the past few months. From labourer to contractor, everybody was into this illegal business to make easy money. While some villagers approached police, the latter's response was not very encouraging, said Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Bhalwal. He said there was an emergent need to keep an eye on firewood smugglers, criminals and charas suppliers in the area. He said if the IGP was really sincere in curbing criminal activities, he must form a special squad of the cops of proven track record. Yesterday, Dilbag had ordered the suspension of PSI Sanjay Raina for misbehaving with an elderly driver at Manthal in Katra. |
