Discrimination with Jammu continues, leaders watch as mute spectators | | | ET Report Jammu, Feb 2: Discrimination against Jammu people by Kashmiri rulers has almost become part of their policy now. Be it selection in professional colleges, or state cadre posts, Jammu has always been at the receiving end. And ironically, the leaders here have been watching all this like mute spectators. Over a decade back, there was nearly a month-long agitation against the MBBS select list. That time too, meritorious candidates of Jammu were ignored and less meritorious candidates of Kashmir were included in the list. Some Jammu University professors, "self-styled" student leaders and local politicians had also come in support of the protesting students and their parents, but the movement had failed. The "leaders" had sold out the agitation by joining hands with the government for "obvious" reasons. The Kashmiri rulers are against giving anything to Jammu. During the Bhum-Bhum Bholey agitation, Omar Abdullah and many other Kashmiri politicians had opposed tooth and nail the transfer of land in Kashmir to Shree Amarnath Shrine Board. The land was to be used for providing temporary facilities to pilgrims. Though it was to be transferred to the government-controlled board and not to any individual, Kashmiri politicians had opposed the move only because the board belongs to Hindus. The latest government discrimination against the people here was witnessed last week when in the select list of state cadre posts of assistant information officers (AIOs), there was no candidate from Jammu. 14 posts of AIOs were advertised by the government in 2008 and 2010. The interviews for these posts were conducted in October last year by the J&K service selection board (JKSSB) members -- Basharat Ahmad and Farooq Ahmad. The list, which was made public a few days back, did not have anyone from Jammu. This showed that both Basharat and Farooq were anti-Jammu. They ensured the entry of only Kashmiris into the list, while rejecting all the candidates from Jammu. This also showed their love for Kashmir and hatred for Jammu. This also strengthened the demand of Jammu people that, while making selection to state cadre posts, the interviewers ought to be from both the regions. In the case of AIOs, both the selectors were from Kashmir. "This was the reason that they altogether rejected Jammu candidates. They deliberately did not give them enough marks in the interview to drop them from the select list," said Rajinder Singh of Panjtirthi. When contacted, a JKSSB functionary refused to make any comments. Even in KAS/KPS interviews, the Jammu candidates have time and again alleged discrimination with them. |
