Business community favours 'more budgetary allocations' for power sector | | | Early TImes Report
Jammu, Feb 3: Business and trading community in Jammu and Kashmir have suggested to the National Conference led Government in Jammu and Kashmir to increase annual allocations for the power and drinking water sectors in the state. Those connected with trade and commerce have conveyed to the Government, especially the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather, the need for securing separate central assistance for setting up new hydel power projects in the state. Since there has been no response from the private sector to the Government's plan involving non-Government sectors in investment in power sector it had become necessary for the Government of India to help the state Government in setting up medium and mini hydel power projects. Members of Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industries Jammu have said that acute shortage of electricity in Jammu and Kashmir had hit hard the industrial sector. Besides this it has put a heavy burden on the state's and the central Government's exchequer when addition money had to be spent on purchase of power. They said against the potential of generating 20,000 MWS the maximum power generation in the state has not crossed 2400 MWs which clearly indicated that the successive state Government's had not allocated sufficient funds for power generation and instead it banked on the NHPC for setting up new hydel power projects. Experts say if the Finance Minister initiates tough steps for ensuring proper implementation of his austerity measures the Government could build three to four mini power projects in the state. They have also suggested to the Finance Minister that instead of increasing power tariff he should secure cooperation from various stat and central Government agencies, offices and organisations or clearing power tariff arrears. These experts have suggested to the Government to constitute a team of senior power engineers which would visit Himachal for studying the technology the state had adopted in setting up mini and micro power projects. |
