Hockey: Fighting Hiranagar boys lose in tie-breaker | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 3: The high spirited young side of Hiranagar Club could not control their nerves in crucial movements and lost their all important game of semifinals to Khalsa Club in the General Zorawar Singh Hockey Championship underway at K K Hakhu Stadium, here today. Tied at 2-2 in the stipulated time, Khalsa Club clinched the thriller in tie-breaker making it 7-4. Now, Khalsa Club shall meet Kathua Club in the title clash, the date for which is yet to be decided by the oranisers of the competition.Earlier, the Hiranagar Club made a brilliant start taking first lead in the 15th minute through Rohit Sharma. But they could not maintain it for long and conceded a goal in the 25th minute. In fact, the aggressive young men of Hiranagar committed a foul which led to umpire awarding a penalty stroke to Khalsa Club, who did no mistake in bringing in an equalizer. Surinder Pal Singh sounded the board on penalty stroke. It was followed by another goal from Khalsa Club when Manpreet Singh converted a well calculated pass from right corner into a goal. The second half of the play witnessed a dilly dallying battle, which ended with Hiranagar sounding the board for their second goal in the 50th minute of the 60-minute game. This time Sumit Khajuria converted a penalty corner into goal. The second half of the play was completely dominated by Hiranagar Club with their offensive game, virtually pushing Khalsa to their goal area most of the time. In the process, five penalty corners were awarded in favour of Hiranagar, but they could able to convert just one into goal in the last 10 minutes play. Later, in tie-breaker, Khalsa strikers beat Hiranagar goal-keeper badly by converting all five strokes into goal. Ravneet Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Jagjeet Singh, Amandeep Singh and Surinder Singh converted penalty strokes into goal. From Hiranagar, only two strikers were successful in their attempts on the goal post while Abhinandan, Rohit and Sehdev missed. Today's semifinal was officiated by Indpal Singh, Jagjeet Singh and Dalbir Mehta. |
