PDD workers clash with police during protest march | Protesting PDD daily wagers submit memorandum to J&K Guv | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 3: Over 50 daily wage workers of Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Department (PDD) today clashed with the police during a protest march demanding regularisation of their services. Shouting anti-government slogans, the workers marched towards Raj Bhavan in the rally which was also joined by former Power Minister and Congress leader Babu Singh. They demanded regularisation of daily wagers and casual labourers who were working for the PDD since the last 5-10 years, as well as release of full wages to them. The police stopped the workers before they could reach Raj Bhavan, resulting in minor clashes. The workers then sat on dharna which disrupted traffic for half an hour. PDD Association leaders had threatened to launch an agitation if the government did not concede to their demands by February 2. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also the Minister in-charge of power ministry in Jammu and Kashmir, had promised the workers in 2009 that their demand would be fulfilled by regularising them in phases. Urging authorities to redress long pending legitimate grievances of PDD daily wagers, Singh expressed full support to the agitating workers. There are over 6,000 daily wagers and casual labourers working for the power department in Jammu and Kashmir. They on the occasion submitted a memorandum to Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra demanding regularisation and clearance of dues of employees of the department. The agitators took out a rally from the PDD Sub-Division Office at Parade Ground and after covering the main markets of the old city, culminated outside the Raj Bhawan this afternoon. They were restricted from entering the Raj Bhawan, which led to a mild clash with the policemen. Later, former Power Minister and senior Congress leader Babu Singh submitted the memorandum to the office of the Governor. PDD daily wagers are protesting for the past two months demanding regularisation.
