Delhi sanctions 356-crore project for Dal Lake, ignores Jammu lakes | Congress's Contribution | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 3: At a time when the aggrieved Jammu youth were seething with anger and cursing the Jammu and Kashmir Government and its Service Selection Board for their indifferent attitude towards them, as also for their total exclusion from the selection list of 14 Assistant Information Officers, New Delhi, at the behest of the state Congress, yesterday sanctioned Rs 356 crore for the rehabilitation of the Dal dwellers ignoring Jammu. According to a report from New Delhi, dated February 2, in this regard reads like this: "In a significant development, the Union Cabinet which met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister approved rehabilitation package for the Dal dwellers worth 356 crore today. The Jammu and Kashmir government for the preservation of Lakes through Lakes and Waterways Development Authority had taken up with Union Ministry of Environment and Forests the project for funding the compensation to be paid to the Dal dwellers for acquisition of their land and structures within the Dal lake. The project has now been cleared after its techno-financial justification. The state representatives pursuing sanctioning of this amount since it was taken up with the Union have expressed gratitude towards the Union Cabinet in general and Prime Minister in particular. It would not have been possible to take developmental initiatives in the State without the support of the Centre, for which the State was indebted to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi also, senior Congress leader stated in a statement. Earlier, the Congress-led UPA Government had sanctioned thousands of crores of rupees for the preservation, development and beautification of Dal Lake. No one would oppose what the Congress did for the Dal dwellers. However, the decision of the Union Government is likely to cause anger in Jammu where the people have virtually stopped urging the authorities to earmark the required funds for the preservation, development and beautification of the fast-decaying ancient lakes like Mansar, Surinsar and Sanasar as well River Tawi, also called Surya Putri, believing that New Delhi would not pay any heed to their demand. The decision of the Congress-led UPA Government could be construed by the people of Jammu province as a manifestation of the Congress's bias against them. People would have appreciated the Congress leaders had they also persuaded the concerned ministry in New Delhi to meet this age-old demand of the people of Jammu province. By not doing so and by pleading the case of Kashmir alone, the Jammu-based senior Congress leaders holding important positions in the government have only strengthened the belief of the people of Jammu region that they have no place whatsoever in their scheme of things, despite the fact that they are in power because of them. It's not a good politics. |
