Taj decides to sell water to people! | Raising funds for Uri project | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 3: After failing to get Dulhasti and Salal Power Projects from NHPC, the minister for Irrigation and Flood Control, Taj Mohi-ud-Din intends to get his `pound of flesh' in urban Jammu Kashmir by selling potable water. Taj today underlined the need for expeditious revenue realization in cities and urban areas for potable water. Chairing a review meeting in this regard, the Minister asked the Chief Engineer, PHE, Jammu to speed up the process of revenue realization in the coming months. The order comes a few days after NHPC refused to hand over the power projects to the state. Responding to the NHPC refusal, Taj said the state will generate funds to buy the Uri Power Project. Taj knows Jammu Kashmir is cash starved state. Raising thousands of crores for the Uri Project is simply impossible, at least for the time being. Taj perhaps intends to raise the amount by `selling' potable water in urban areas. Water, forms an important and major resource of Jammu Kashmir state. The NHPC has been looting this valuable resource for several decades. The minister has been issued strong statements against the NHPC for the past two years. However, the `powerful' corporation has refused to budge. But he knows that the hapless people of Jammu Kashmir are a gullible lot. They never protest and they can never muster the courage to ignore the Minister's orders like the NHPC. But Taj, the people have been paying for the water they get from the taps! |
