Sitar recital captivates at SaMaPa Festival | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU , Feb 4 : The 8th day of ongoing SaMaPa Aalap Festival 2012 witnessed a captivating Sitar recital by Mohsin Ali Khan and his son Mehtab at K.C. Public School. The 7th Annual SaMaPa Aalap Festival is being presented by the Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts (SaMaPa) in collaboration with Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and Deptt. of Tourism, J&K. The concert was attended by a large number of students and staff of the School. The function started with the traditional lamp lighting by the principal R.D. Thakur, senior vice principal Rajeshwar Dubey, eminent musicologist and music critic Vijay Shankar Mishra, Santoor maestro & music composer Abhay Rustum Sopori and School cultural coordinator Shobna Sethi. Abhay Rustum Sopori, who is credited for creating a new generation of music connoisseurs in the country especially the State of Jammu and Kashmir, said that it's the responsibility of every child to consciously take music seriously and carry the cultural heritage forward. He said music will provide better creative skills in all walks of professional life for better thinking, while providing sensitivity and better productivity. Mohsin Ali Khan along with his son Mehtab presented Raga Todi with Aalap and Jod, Vilambit Gat in Rupak Taal, followed by famous Bandish "Ab Mori Naiyya Paar Karo Tum Hazrat Nizaamuddin Auliyaa" and Drut Gat in Teentaal. He explained the students the subtle technicalities of sitar playing teaching the basics. Mehtab is an upcoming Sitar player and his plying was well applauded. Mohsin represents the Bhindi Bazar Muradabad Gharana and is an "A" grade artist of All India Radio. Sarit Das on Tabla provided equally brilliant accompaniment. Earlier, the programme began a brief Tabla duet recital by the students of the School namely Chanchal Singh (Class X) and Shivom (Class XI). Kajol Reshi (class X) coordinated the proceedings of the function. Vachaspati Sharam was the Chief Guest of the occasion and was delighted to see the presentations. The concert was also attended by sufi singer Ragini Rainu, Sardar Charan Singh, Jagdeep Kaur, Ustad Sajjad Ahmed & many others. The principal Thakur presented mementos to the performing musicians and the guests, and presented the vote of thanks. He complimented SaMaPa and Abhay Sopori for taking enormous and pioneering steps to revive the cultural scenario of the State and contributing to its further growth. He also congratulated Mohsin Ali and his accompanists for a splendid performance which took everyone to a different world. He said what food is to body, music is to soul and extended all his support to SaMaPa for its future festivals. |
