Ruling NC's latest worry: PDP's focus in Jammu | PDP taking Local Bodies polls seriously with well drawn up strategy | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 4: Ruling National Conference's latest worry on the political front is not any controversy or issue related to governance. It is worried over the way its rival PDP is gradually making inroads and consolidating itself in Jammu region. Contrary to toeing the line of its alliance partner Congress or having harmony and coordination with its leadership, NC too has started off its activities in the pockets where it has strongholds in Jammu as a 'preparatory exercise' for Local Bodies elections. Sources within the NC said the Jammu leadership is particularly perturbed PDP is spreading out to areas of Jammu where it had no base, not to speak of any support till recently. The PDP High Command is focusing on Jammu with a clear vision of first reaching out to pockets where the party remained unknown or had no good image (in terms of not being secular and its Kashmir centric political ideology), and gradually building a rapport with masses to convey party's ideas and plans for the entire state as envisioned by the leadership, sources said. PDP is also trying to dispel its image of not being Kashmir centric and in a bid to do so Muftis themselves along with Jammu based leaders are building contact with the masses of Jammu region through its public meetings and rallies. During the past two months, PDP has organized dozens of such rallies in different parts of Jammu city and have a planned schedule for coming days for other districts. "PDP surely is taking ensuing Municipal Bodies Polls seriously……if they continue consistently with such serious approach and hold programmes it is going to bear some fruits even if at the cost of cutting BJP or Congress edge …", said a senior leader of National Conference adding if NC leadership chooses to watch this with complacency of being in power, it will be in a disadvantageous position. Sources at the high level within NC however said party's first line leadership in Jammu has been asked to 'activate' and resume the activities in full gear in Jammu in order to be in competition with its rival PDP and make its presence felt much before the poll activity started in Jammu region. This , however may not augur well for NC as it has yet to decide with its main ally as to what strategy the two partners would adopt in at least the Corporation elections .It is pertinent to mention in last Corporation polls, NC managed a good performance and occupied the seat of Deputy Mayor for five consecutive terms. Congress, on the contrary has yet to start off any activity with regard to Corporation polls or which can be seen as an exercise to firm up its field . The leadership which is right now busy with bigger issues including the Assembly elections has not this in priority or may be that it doesn't want to disclose what is in its kitty with regard to poll strategy, but PDP inroads in many pockets may eventually cost dearly to Congress as well, said a leader of NC. Sources said even though PDP is mainly trying to fill in the void and vacuum created by BJP's loss in the segments due to its shattered image on many fronts, its gain is only pinching the rival NC most. |
