Congress faced with grim future in J&K | | | In its 47-year long history the state unit of the Congress is faced with a grim future in Jammu and Kashmir despite the fact that it has been sharing power since 2002.It shared power with the PDP between 2002 and 2008 and since 2008 it has been sharing power in the state with the National Conference. No doubt the National Conference had become the branch of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir in 1965 the former has had a long history of love-hate relations with the latter. One had fears that after the death of Sheikh Abdullah the National Conference may cease to be a force to reckon with but the party which had been led by the redoubtable Sheikh Abdullah had built strong bases in all the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir. The result was that the National Conference, despite facing political fluctuations, has survived and remained a political organisation that cannot be ignored. But the leadership, which lacks rapport with people, seems to have been responsible for gradual decline in the strength and size of the organisation in the state. What seems to have proved disadvantageous for the Congress is the valley centric and rigid ideology being followed its partner, the National Conference.Political pundits do not hesitate holding the NC leadership responsible for the mess in which the state unit of the Congress finds itself in. These very pundits blame the NC leadership, especially Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, for following a divide and rule policy vis-a-vis the Congress. And if a senior Minister,Taj Mohiuddin, has shown his vigour in measuring muscles with a former Congress minister,Abdul Gani Vakil, and the PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz, it is the result of support and patronage Taj has received from the Chief Minister.Apart from the threat posed to its survival by the scheming NC leadership the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir has been aching and ailing because of the growing conflict between the dissidents, led by the Union Health Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azad, and the loyalists, headed by the PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz.At times the line dividing the dissidents from the loyalists keeps on getting hazy with one loyalist joining the camp of dissidents and one dissident supporting the loyalists. The recent instance is that of Abdul Gani Vakil who was a known Soz baiter but after he fell out with T aj Mohiuddin he is trying to join the camp of loyalists. One thing has been experienced in the past.Whenever the Congress at the national level or in the centre is in a state of flux it casts its shadow on its unit in Jammu and Kashmir.Between 1984,when Indira Gandhi was assassinated, and 1991,when Rajiv Gandhi was killed, the Congress had lost much of its political sheen. Its impact on its state unit was felt when the then tallest Congressite,Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, quit the Congress in 1987 to join the Jan Morcha floated by former Prime Minister,V.P.Singh.Since then it has been a story of Congress getting sandwiched between the two Kashmir centric political parties, the National Conference and the PDP.The rapid strides the 11-year old PDP has taken in Jammu and Kashmir it has not caused erosion only in the National Conference but in the Congress too.Hence time has come for the Congress high command to take cognisance of the infighting in the state unit of the party and of the role the NC leadership was playing in forcing the Congress to be on the defensive. No doubt the Congress high command is engaged in highly vital Assembly elections in five states and is upset with the series of scams it needs to find time to tackle the Congress mess in Jammu and Kashmir. This can be done by carrying out fresh reorganisation of the PCC and if it decides to allow Soz to head the party in Jammu and Kashmir he should get full powers to shape the party without any interference from people like Azad,Taj and Saroori. |
