City sewerage woes adding miseries into public life this winter | | | Pankhuri Aggarwal
Jammu, Feb 5: While the winter continues to tread on its actual fury, this has compounded into many problems with inclement weather and intermittent gushing rains leaving the city choked or otherwise overflowing with the stinking sewage. There is no proper drainage system and the situation worsens during rain. Although there are stringent laws in place put in by the Jammu municipal corporation but there are no strict implementations of those. In a small lane one may find almost ten sewerage covers making the roads look patchy and irregular. Mamta Prusty, a student said, “In the morning I have to go to my tuition but due to the overflowing of sewage it is tough for me as my clothes always use to get dirty and I usually reach my tuitions’ late because of such a chaotic state every day”. She further added, “But now the condition is going to be really problematic for me as fog too has started showing up in the early morning which hampered the visibility inviting risk for any hazardous peril”. Despite complains there is no one to turn for the help. Areas between the jewel chowk and canal road are badly affected while various road sections all over the city area and even the outskirts are also affected from unhygienic conditions. “Although the water flows in between various lanes but still it has no end or stoppage and as a result it is covering a large number of area affecting the traffic of the area as well”, said Ramesh Malhotra, resident of Vikas Nagar. He further added, “The stink of the water and the garbage accumulated with it is making our life challenging. The drainage system should be made proper so that regular cleaning after equal time intervals of these lines can be made possible and such situation may never arise again in future”. Even though this situation is not at a halt but the glitches for the residents especially of the canal road are accumulating day by day as more sewage pipes are started getting installed and the roads are in worst condition. “To complete one section of the road the workers are taking almost a year and now because of bad weather I don’t think the work is going to end within another year or so. Every patch of the roads is dug-up and there is no space even for the pedestrians to move around and so we have to resort for another route leading to traffic and unnecessary time consumption”, rued D.K Sharma, another resident of Shakti Nagar. The municipal corporation has to understand that the sewer pipelines placed by them are not so wide and because of that it gets choked easily. Cleaning of the pipes has become a necessary issue. A small shower of rain is sufficient for the choking of sewer pipes and the drainage system of the city comes to a standstill. It has become the need of the hour to solve this problem as soon as possible for safe and sound living of the Jammuities. |
