Spice Park will ensure quality control, marketing of Saffron-Mir | | | Early Times Report BUDGAM, Feb 5:- Minister for Agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir, today emphasized the need to initiate steps for protection of heritage saffron besides increasing productivity and improving its quality. The Minister was addressing a public gathering after distributing Rs.87 lakh among 817 saffron growers of District Budgam, who have participated this year in rejuvenation of saffron corms under "National Mission on Saffron" at Sheikh-ul-Alam Hall Budgam. It is worthwhile to mention here that under all the four phases of Saffron Mission Rs. 12.28 crore were distributed among 2696 saffron growers and 330 hectares of land was covered. Mir said that Government would provide all requisite facilities to the growers for producing qualitative saffron in the state. He said several measures have been initiated to ensure better prices of saffron. He disclosed that a Spice Park worth Rs. 22.6 crore will ensure quality control & marketing facilities of this most expensive spice. He said that country has to import saffron to meet the domestic demand of 20 MTs per year and Government has launched this programme to increase saffron production in the state, so that country's demand is met. He appreciated the efforts of the department in implementing National Mission on Saffron & advised farmers to adopt latest technical know-how, incentives for irrigation & mechanization. He impressed upon the officers & officials of the department to work as facilitators of the farming community. Director Agriculture Kashmir Dr. Farooq A. Lone said that the objective of the mission is to review the saffron cultivation by providing latest technology to the farmers. He said that the mission envisaged covering 3700 hector. in the four years of implementation. Besides weeders & hot air dryers are being provided on 5o% subsidy, while as Vermi-composts are also being provided with the assistance of `30,000/- per unit. He disclosed that 122 bore-wells are being provided to saffron growers for irrigation facilities. Director Horticulture Kashmir G.H. Shah advised the farmers to use improved agriculture practices to increase production besides improving the quality of Saffron. Among others attended function Additional District Development Commissioner Budgam, S.S.P. Budgam, Chief Agriculture Officer & other officers/officials of the Agriculture Department. |
