Simmering discontent in NC over delay in party elections | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Feb 5: Internal bickering in the NC has been delaying party elections which should normally have been held at three year intervals. This has resulted in the party cardes both at the middle and the lower rungs raising eye brows. Interestingly, elections for the party President, Vice President and the General Secretary are also overdue now. The last party elections were held in the NC in 2005 when Dr. Farooq Abdullah was made the President and Sheikh Nazir was re-elected as the General Secretary. Without fear of any disciplinary action the middle and lower rung leaders of the party have been openly accusing the top leadership of the NC for its failure to hold these elections which are overdue by more than eight years now. The net result of this delay has been that besides the President, the Vice President, the General Secretary and Provincial Presidents, 22 district presidents, 82 block presidents and thousands of halqa presidents have remained unelected in the NC for the last eight years. Many NC workers claim that the delay has been done on design to ensure that none outside the Abdullah dynasty gets elected to the top slots in the party. Sources in the party suggest that some senior NC leaders have been eyeing the post of the General Secretary after the failing health of the present General Secretary Sheikh Nazir. The ouster of Sheikh Mustafa Kamal from the additional general secretary's post in the NC has also resulted in many NC workers openly questioning the wisdom of this decision. Although Mustafa Kamal has been maintaining that he would not rebel against the party and would act as a faithful soldier of the NC, the senior NC leader has now started expressing fears that if the party elections are not held in time things might get out of hand for the high command of the party. "Not holding the party elections is a bad precedent and it has already started causing anguish among the rank and file of the NC", said a middle rung NC leader who requested not to be named. |
