| BSF protests Rangers providing support fire; Pak refuses | | Infiltration bid foiled in Jammu; two BSF men injured | | JAMMU|JAN 17 Two BSF personnel, including an officer, were today injured in an exchange of fire during an unsuccessful infiltration bid by militants along the border with Pakistan in Khour sector of Jammu. India lodged a strong protest over the incident with Pakistan, which said its border guards were not involved in the firing as initially stated by the BSF. Sub-Inspector Avinash Chander and Constable Panday were injured during a gun battle that erupted when BSF troops patrolling the frontier spotted a group of eight to 10 militants near Matkola border outpost around 0240 hours. The protest was lodged by BSF during a flag meeting of company commanders at Matkola, but the Pakistan Rangers said its personnel were not involved in the incident, which it described as "the handiwork of militants". BSF Director General A K Mitra said he had "no reason to believe anyone other than militants were involved" in the exchange of fire. Earlier, a BSF spokesman in Jammu said Pakistan Rangers provided supporting fire to the infiltrators, but Pakistan Army spokesman Maj Gen Shaukat Sultan in Islamabad dismissed this as "baseless, false and ludicrous". Additional DIG (intelligence) K S Chouhan said the militants opened heavy fire with AK rifles on BSF troopers, who returned fire. This sparked a heavy exchange of fire by the two sides, he said. After about half an hour, the BSF men fired illumination bombs to light up the area and saw the militants running and entering a Pakistan Rangers' post 400 metres from the zero line or frontier, Chouhan said. |
