Traffic Cops "charge" Rs 500 per private vehicle from Qazigund to Jammu......? | In the name of inclement weather | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 6: With heavy snowfall and rains hitting at different parts of the 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway at Ramban and Banihal, Jawahar Tunnel and Qazigund in Kashmir valley, forcing the suspension of vehicular movement from Kashmir to Jammu in past three days, certain traffic Cops deployed at Qazigund point are allegedly charging "fee" from Light Motor Vehicles (commercial Taxis) for allowing them to proceed towards Jammu. It is shocking but true that "private vehicles including commercial taxis like Tavera, Innova, Tata Indica, Ford Fiesta, Tata Sumos, Wingers, and Scorpios etc are being allowed to further move towards Jammu from Qazigund only after a receipt of Currency Note of 500 from the drivers/owners of the vehicles." While people are suffering due to inclement weather, a handful of traffic cops are "enjoying" while "collecting" booty from hapless stranded passengers on different locations on national highway. Though top police officers maintain that only heavy vehicles and trucks carrying essential commodities were allowed from Srinagar to Jammu in past two days but reliable sources in traffic wing of state police department revealed that "after every twenty to thirty heavy vehicles certain traffic cops at helm of affairs at Qazigund point allowed five to ten light motor vehicles. However, they (Cops) did not miss to fetch a Currency Note of 500 from each four wheeler (private/commercial). "It's disgusting. We are stuck here at Qazigund since past three days. But we are not allowed to move towards Jammu. Every time we are explained the situation as risky to drive further due to apprehensions of avalanches and heavy snow falls. However they are openly allowing commercial taxis to proceed further with obvious reasons," pointed out Rakesh Kumar over a telephonic conversation with ET. "If the authorities concerned are allowing vehicles from Jammu towards Srinagar in past two days why they are not allowing vehicles from Kashmir to Jammu. Which law is restricting the officials to do so?" questioned another Jammu resident Raj Kumar who too is stranded at Anantnag. He too alleged, "There is no check on the loot initiated by traffic cops. They are openly pocketing money. But what about poor like us. If we will not be allowed to reach our houses in Jammu in another a day or so, we will be left with no other option than to starve." Like Rakesh Kumar and Raj Kumar, there are numerous such cases of passengers from Jammu who are stranded at different locations from Anantnag to Qazigund. They have appealed to top brass of traffic wing to intervene and rescue them from the demand (money) of certain tainted cops on duty there. |
