| NC's decline in Rajouri worries Farooq | | | Sumit Bhargav
rajouri, Feb 6: Once considered a bastion of National Conference (NC), Rajouri has disappointed former Chief Minister and Patron of NC. Farooq recently said that he was totally upset with the position of party in Rajouri. While the District President, Bashir Ahmad Wani has his own reasons for the decline, supporters have other reasons to worry about.
NC's decline in the border district has been ascribed to a variety of reasons. Senior leaders like Chowdhury Talib Husain, Chowdhury Muhammad Husain, Mirza Abdul Rashid and Bashir Lone were very active not only in Rajouri but at the state level. The NC flourished during those times in the district. However, these senior leaders are no more active and their absence is reflected in the performance of the party. NCF supporters say that the main assembly seat in Rajouri was always won by NC. Today the family of top class NC leader Chowdhary Mohammad Husain is no more with NC and his son Zulfkar Ali is sitting PDP MLA from Darhal constituency.
NC's weakness clearly came into light during assembly elections when Aslam Khan was given the ticket. This did not go well with senior leader and former MP, Chowdhary Talib who contested elections as an independent candidate. The chances of improvement seem quite bleak. Another conflict is expected over allotment of tickets in the coming future. Several names have to be considered by the party high command. These include Ex-MP Chowdhary Talib and Ex-MLA Aslam Khan.
Manjakote area which has remained a strong belt of party is weak as present Congress MLA and MoS Shabir Ahmed Khan belongs to this area and has a strong hold here. Both PDP and Congress have got a strong hold in Thanamandi belt which remained as a rich vote bank of NC.
BJP, NPP and Congress have attained strong grip over Bathuni area which at one time was a strong hold of NC. The BJP and Congress have gained ground in the city. The death of Ex-MLC Bashir lone is regarded as major jolt to party.
Darhal constituency has a similar story to tell. Sitting PDP MLA Zulfkar Ali, Ex-Congress Minister Thakur Puran Singh, Congress leader Iqbal Malik has a strong hold over the constituency. In Nowshera constituency MLC Ravinder Sharma and Ex-Congress Minister Dr. Ramesh Sharma give no respite to the NC.
Kalakote happens to be the only constituency where MLA Rashpal Singh leads NC from the front. Party supporters have sought active role for senior leaders to revive the party. |
