PSI beats up CID driver, breaks his front tooth | Inhumane police face: | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Feb 6: Though spasmodic attempts have been made from time to time to reform J&K police and make it people-friendly, many of its officers continue to make the misuse of khaki while dealing with public and their own men. In one such incident that came as a surprise to many in the state police circles, the inhumane police face was exposed when a probationary sub-inspector (PSI) today beat up a driver of the CID wing of state police so badly that his front tooth was broken. What makes the incident noteworthy and shocking is that it has been committed by a PSI who has just passed out from PTA, Udhampur, where the under trainees are taught to respect law and not to take law in their hands while performing their duties. He lost temper over a trivial issue. The incident occured at about 9 am when PSI Sushil Choudhary asked Ashok Kumar, a driver in CID, to stop smoking cigarette. He was on duty outside radio station at Panjtirthi where Ashok was smoking a cigarette, a senior police officer said. He said when the PSI asked him not to smoke at the public place, he obliged but soon there were heated exchanges between them. It soon became a major issue, the like of which Jammu has perhaps never witnessed before, after the angered PSI shifted the driver to the nearby Pacca Danga police station and allegedly gave him a sound beating, the officer added. He was beaten so badly that his front tooth was broken, he said. SP (CID CI) Joginder Singh, who is also holding the charge of SSP CID in the absence of Rajinder Gupta who is on leave, said he had spoken to senior police officers in this regard. Ashok had also lodged an FIR against the PSI at Pacca Danga police station, he informed. Singh said due to some misunderstanding over cigarette smoking, Ashok was taken by the PSI to the Pacca Danga police station and beaten severely as a result of which he lost his one tooth. The driver later got himself treated at the GMCH here. Another senior police officer said how a PSI could behave so overbearingly and arrogantly when he was taught at PTA to ensure prohibition of torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment to any person while discharging lawful duties. Choudhary is the second PSI who has conducted himself "unlawfully" at a checking point. Earlier, PSI Sanjay Raina was suspended by IGP Dilbag Singh for misbehaving with an elderly driver near Katra. |
