J&K Eco-Club students selected for UNEP

Jammu, Feb 7: United Nations Environment Programme every year to draw the experience of young environmentalists to find solutions and inspire action globally organizes International Youth and Children Conference on Environment popularly known as TUNZA. TUNZA is a Swahili word meaning "To treat with care and affection". This conference is an effort to raise the voice of youths and Children throughout the world for environmental justice not only for present generation but also for the coming generations. For the first time Asia-Pacific UNEP TUNZA Conference is being organized from 6th to 8th February 2012 at CEE Ahmedabad to have a regional focus on environmental action by children and youth of the region.
This conference shall provide inputs to two significant international events, The Rio+20 Earth Summit and UNCBD COP-11 being organized by United Nations in June 2012 at Rio Brazil and October 2012 at Hyderabad.
In India CEE Ahmadabad organized online and school project competitions in the Paryavaran Mitra and Eco club schools of all the states of country.
After a rigorous multi level process of selection, 20 students from all states have been selected to take part in the UNEP-TUNZA International Children and Youth conference. In J&K WWF-India was the partner with CEE to facilitate the selection process. In J&K about 15 schools participated in online and school project competitions. In the online competition catogary Ms. Yamini Gupta of Class 9th from, Delhi public School Rajouri have been selected. In the school project competitions Kendrya Vidyalaya No.1 Akhnoor have been selected and the Eco club teacher Shakultla Kotwal and two students Goukal G. Kumar of Class 10th and Bittu kumar of class 11th have been selected for participation. For the first time three students and a teacher have been selected from J&K state to participate in the UNEP-TUNZA conference who will further participate in the Rio+20 conference in Brazil and UNCBD conference at Hyderabad based on their performance and final selection. WWF-India team comprising of Dr CM Seth, Pankaj Chandan, Rohit Rattan and others worked hard to train the students for the selection.
