Jammu, Feb 7: Union Minister Farooq Abdullah may have warned people against forces exploiting religion at the time of elections for political mileage but perhaps he might have forgotten that his son's lines in 2008 have sparked Amarnath land Row.
As there is a good saying 'it is easy to say but to practice and the same may be aptly fits to National Conference (NC) leadership which only believes in delivering sermons but rarely tries to practice the same at its own.
In a veiled attack on BJP for its promises to build the Ram Temple in the poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, Abdullah said, "Go and build, why announcing this at the time of elections. "We divide the people. We divide India in the name of religion. Why should we exploit the name of religion, language and culture?" he said at a function to launch a 2 MW Wind Turbine.
"I want to see a day when I can see my God in the eyes of a Hindu and a Hindu can see his God in my eyes," the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said in philosophical manner just to won applauds from the crowd.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a seminar here, Abdullah criticised leaders for using religion to mobilise and channelise the emotions of the people.
But here, the Union Minister Farooq Abdullah and senior NC leader probably had beautifully bushed aside from the words of the none other but his own son Omar who crying hoarse throat has said, "Hum ek inch zamin nahi denge.' And these words sparked the months long row between the two regions of state viz Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah was targetting veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani for raising the contentious Babri Mosque-Ram Temple issue ahead of polls in Uttar Pradesh.
Putting his foot in the shoe of senior party leader Political Advisor to Chief Minister Devender Singh Rana today reminded the people of the secular traditions of National Conference. "National Conference will not allow the divisive politics of PDP and communal traits of BJP to flourish in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, he too sidelined from the live telecast on July 2008.
'We represent pluralistic ethos, cultural diversity and communal harmony', Rana said adding that this characteristics of the state would be strengthened further.
However following party tradition he targeted the BJP and accused the BJP for wedging apart the society in the name of region and religion.
While politicians may have different replies and often use the religion for their political convenience, Sunil Kumar a teacher maintained mixing of religion with politics is a dangerous trend because religious attitude is diametrically opposed to democratic feelings." "Democracy demands open mindedness, universal brotherhood and thinking based upon reason and capable of taking its own decision. In such cases, there is no herd tendency and the person is liberal in outlook, he added.
Deepak Gupta a university student observed the 'religion' is a private affair and if it is allowed to appear in public affairs it will corrupt politics. But politicians make a way for religion to intermix it with politics, he added.
He further opinioned, "It is wrong to think that with the help of laws it is possible to divorce religion from politics but till the attitude of the people is changed, and till they rise above the petty considerations it is not possible to keep religion and politics apart.'
