Govt committed to safeguard rights of girl child: Wakhlu | SSWB observes World Girl Child Day | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 8: Chairperson, State Social Welfare Board (SSWB) Khem Lata Wakhlu today said that the government was keen to safeguard the rights of Girl Child adding that several steps have been taken for protection and wellbeing of girls in the society. "Wellbeing of Girl Child in the society is a great challenge, particularly in the backdrop of declining male -female ratio. There is a need to create awareness among the people about the implications of this falling trend" Wakhlu said while addressing a function at Government College for Woman (GCW) Parade organized by the SSWB to mark World Girl Child Day. She stressed the need to wipe out the inherent discrimination prevalent in the society against the girl child. She said eradication of such tendency in the society was imperative for the rapid socio-economic development of the country. She said girl was important to complete a family and for the survival of human existence. The Chairperson stressed for involving the Voluntary Organizations in creating awareness against the female feoticide, domestic violence and other crimes against the woman. She said self-defense was the best tool for the girls to protect themselves from the problems they face in the society adding that they (girls) need to be trained in Judo and karate at school and college levels. Regretting the prevalence of sex determination and other crimes against the women, she said that such acts are against the humanity and need to be stopped in a civilized society. For the purpose, she appealed different social groups and NGO's to work in unison and fight against the inherent discrimination that exists in society against the girl child.MLA Indu Pawar and MLA Smt. Bimla Luthra also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the importance of saving the girl for the survival of human existence Earlier, Executive Director/Secretary SSWB presented welcome address with brief note of the programme.Other dignitaries who spoke on the occasion included Principal Government College for Women Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Prof. Rita Jitender, Dr. Sunita Zalpuri, Dr. Manju thapa and Dr. Rajni Sehgal. The programme also witnessed awareness lectures staging of plays and cultural items depicting the importance of the welfare and wellbeing of girls. The cultural items were presented by J&K Women Welfare Society and J&K Women Welfare Organization. An interaction session was also held during which the students raised questions relating to the subject to the penal of speakers and were satisfied with the replies. A Signature campaign regarding "SAVE GIRL CHILD'' was also launched on the occasion. The signature campaign will continue till International Women Day observed every year on March 8. All those present were urged upon to participate in Signature campaign to make the general public aware about the importance of girl child day. Later, the Chairperson distributed trophies among the girls who participated in the cultural programmes. |
