Early Times Report

KATHUA, Feb 8: In order to counter the attacks of yellow rust on wheat crop an interaction cum awareness programme was organized under the supervision of AEO Prem Chand at village Badala, Kathua.
On the occasion large numbers of farmers participated and interacted with the technical Agriculture officers AEO Prem Chand, Anil Dub (R-e-Z) and Sanjeev Kumar (R-e-Z) where they tthe technical know to the farmers in order to protect their wheat produce from the attacks of yellow rust which is spreading in the areas rapidly.
The AEO Chand said that the yellow rust also known as Stripe rust is caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis that affects cereal production worldwide due to rapid systemic infection of affected plants resulting in defoliation and shrived kernels.
While giving awareness to the farmers more than 50 bottles of Propiconazole were distributed among the among the farmers by the agriculture department.
Although too low winter temperatures and untimely rain may be one of the reasons for the fungus to survive locally and causing substantial losses in some wheat fields.
They urged the farmers to use the chemical in ample quantity so as to tackle the attack of yellow rust on wheat.
They said that the yield losses can be reduced or prevented by timely fungicide application which requires inspecting the crop regularly for symptoms starting at seedling stage.
It is important to plan an inspection just before flag leaf emergence. Year-round cropping including winter and spring wheat, barley and grass provides living hosts known as a green bridge for the pathogen to survive, with subsequent infection and development of stripe rust.
An integrated approach using durable resistance and appropriate cultural practices will allow producers to effectively implement sustainable control strategies for stripe rust management and control.
On the occasion the Sarpanch of Badala Yash Paul Raina and Naib Sarpanch Rajinder Singh of the Badala also addressed the farmers and urged them to avail the facilities provided by the agriculture department for the farmers.
