Changing Kashmir

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 8: The writing on the wall is clear. Kashmir is changing and changing very fast. Gone are the days when political leaders would get away with anything. A person of Syed Ali Geelani's stature is keenly watched, criticized and even ridiculed in today's Kashmir. A constituent of Hurriyat (G) has the gut to dissociate itself from Geelani's political activities in New Delhi.
The Hurriyat (G) chairman is currently in New Delhi. He met chairman of Kashmir Committee, Ram Jethmalani. He also met some leaders of the BJP including film star Shatrugun Sinha. Geelani's activities in New Delhi did not go well with a constituent of the conglomerate headed by Geelani. Muslim League issued a statement yesterday dissociating itself from `Geelani's political activities' in New Delhi. "We do not subscribe to what Geelani has been doing in New Delhi for the past few days", a spokesman of the Muslim league said. This is the first time when a constituent of the Hurriyat (G) has openly expressed reservations over the activities of his chairman.
Muslim League (ML) has been a staunch supporter of Geelani from the very beginning. It is headed by Masrat Alam. Masrat is undergoing detention at present. He has been held responsible for triggering the 2010 agitation.
Anti-Geelani demonstrations were held by angry youth during 2010 agitation when he issued a statement on strikes. The youth even torched Geelani's effigy. He had to explain his position. Similar demonstrations were held against Hizbul Mujahideen supreme commander, Syed Salah-ud-Din.
In another development, the Bar Association issued show cause notice to former president, Advocate Nazir Ahmad Runga for appearing in courts yesterday. The Bar Association, it may be mentioned, had supported Geelani's strike call. The call, however, evoked partial response. Other lawyers who were served show cause notice include Ashraf Wani, Babar Qadri.
