Sajjad says Drug Policy flawed | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 10: Peoples' Conference Chairman, Sajad Lone while criticizing the State Government's 'short-sightedness and lack of planning foresight', Friday alleged that the recently adopted Drug Policy is flawed and poses more problems than it solves for the common people. "A consumer's right of choice is an integral part of the economics of the 21st Century and consumers and patients should get that choice while buying medicines as well. Doctors should also retain the right to prescribe those medicines that they have, over the course of years of practice, found to be more efficient and reliable than other brands of the same medicine. The State Government's apparent plan of sourcing generic medicines from underperforming Pharma Public Sector Units in other parts of India defies both economic as well as rational sense," Lone said in a statement. "This seems to be a veiled attempt to aid the survival of sick PSUs in other parts of the country at a cost to the quality of medicines in J&K. The possibility of ministers and bureaucrats having financial stakes in this context cannot and should not be ruled out. The State Government's claim that the policy would cut down costs is an isolated, half-baked assessment as traditional economic wisdom states that governments controlling the manufacturing and sale of products in a regulated market atmosphere can never result in cheaper products as compared to free, unregulated markets where competition and choice is a driving force for better quality and better rates," he added. The PC chairman claimed the Drug Policy would reduce the quality of medicines in the market which would pose great inconvenience to patients on life-long medications and curtail the decision making power of doctors and practitioners to rely on drugs from tried and tested brands. "This State Government cannot even run the government. How can it be trusted with sourcing generic medicines from PSUs when the case of medicines is a case of life and death in many instances? The Drug Policy doesn't solve any issues that its being credited to solve, rather creates myriad problems in the healthcare sector - a sector that has already suffered enormously due to successive vision-deficient and corrupt governments in the State. The government has also failed to take all stakeholders on board and consulting with them before drafting this policy, which is an unacceptable and arrogant route to policy making," he added. |
