BJP, NPP can capture Congress's political space in Jammu provided… | Ending Discrimination -- II | | Neha Jammu, Feb 10: As said, one Congress minister was shown the door some 18 months ago, two are in the dock and may be out of the council of ministers anytime from now and others, including those belonging to the National Conference (NC), are, according to the general perception, also not above-board. The position of the Chief Minister is not different, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership and others, especially the Panthers Party leaders like Bhim Singh, accusing Omar Abdullah of indulging in "political corruption" and holding him, his father and Minister of State for Home Affairs responsible for the death of loyalist of Abdullah family Syed Mohammad Yousuf last year. The general perception is that "all in the government are on a looting spree" and that "majority of them have become multi-millionaire overnight". It's all anarchy prevailing across the state. Almost everyone in Jammu and Kashmir holds this view. It is also the view that the "ruling elite has manipulated and destroyed all the institutions to safeguard and further their vested interests". The very fact that the people do not have any love lost for the ruling elite in the state is an indication that the opposition parties can capture its political space. The PDP can capture the NC's political space in the Valley and the BJP, even if divided, and Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) in Jammu. The NC has lost the people's confidence in Kashmir; it has little support-base in Jammu province because an overwhelming majority of people in this part of the state despises this Kashmir-based party for its communal and divisive ideology. It is obvious that the PDP, which has become pro-active over the period, would be the beneficiary in Kashmir, and not in Jammu because of its insistence on self-rule, which is no different in implications from that of greater autonomy. In Jammu province, it can only be the BJP and the JKNPP and a couple of independent political leaders like Ashwini Kumar Sharma (Bishnah) who can turn the tables against the Congress in at least 24 constituencies or in Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Udhampur, parts of Reasi, Rajouri, Ramban, Kishtwar, and even Doda districts. The Congress has become unpopular in this province not simply because of its ministers' alleged involvement in corruption but also because the Jammu-based Congress ministers have failed the people of the province by becoming a party to what the NC leadership has been doing to jeopardize the legitimate rights and interest of the people in this part of the state. What has added more to the anger of people of Jammu province is what was done only recently to them under the very nose of the Jammu-based Congress ministers or in connivance with them. The case in point is the additional package of over 350 crore for Dal Lake, total exclusion of Jammu youth from the list of selected candidates for the posts of assistant information officer, 14 in number, the withdrawal of the order under which the Dogras were to get Dogra certificate, the new job policy and so on. Everything in Jammu province favours BJP and JKNPP and everything in Kashmir favours PDP. It is for them to make optimum use of the prevailing situation. The BJP and the JKNPP can surely capture the Congress's political space in Jammu provided it is willing to become pro-active like the PDP. The BJP/the JKNPP can even capture the Jammu Cantonment Assembly Constituency. Such is the political environment in Jammu province. (Concluded) |
