19 killed, 1 injured as minibus falls into gorge at Gandoh

kishtwar, Feb 10: In yet another tragic incident, 19 people were this morning killed and one was injured when a minibus, which was on its way from Gowari to Thathri, skidded off the road and fell into a 200 mt deep gorge at Manoi near Gandoh.
The accident took place at about 9.30 am. As soon as its news spread, a large number of people, police and jawans of 26 RR and 151 Bn of CRPF, besides a team of Red Cross, rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation which was supervised by DC and SSP, Doda.
The injured Riaz Ahmed, son of Mohammad Ramzan of Sarlia, was admitted to emergency hospital, Thathri, from where he was airlifted to GMCH, Jammu.
After the rescue operation was over, people held a demonstration in protest against the alleged lack of health facilities in the hospital which falls in the hometown of union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. They also shouted slogans against district administration and health department.
Gandoh sarpanch Khurshid Ahmed alleged that instead of seven doctors, only two doctors, including BMO, were on duty at the time of the accident.
PHE minister Taj Mohudin, industries and commerce minister, MLA (Bhaderwah) Mohammad Sharief Niaz, MLA (Inderwal) GM Saroori and divisional commissioner (Jammu) Pawan Kotwal also reached Gandoh by helicopter and went to the accident site.
Taj said the accident occured due to slippery conditions as a lot of snow had accumulated on the road due to sub-zero temperature.
He said the accident took place after the driver lost control over the vehicle. Chief minister Omar Abdullah had already announced a relief of Rs 1 lakh to the family of each dead.
In response to a question as regards the protest over shortage of doctors, Taj said health department was making all its efforts for appointment of more doctors to fill up vacancies.
The deceased were identified as Amit Singh (22 yrs), son of Om Prakash of Bunecha, Noor Mohammadd (20), son of Ghulam Ali Gujjar of Drie, his brother Abbas Ahmed (14), Devi Chand (45), son of Jagat Ram of Alni Gajote, Raj Mohammad (32), son of Mohammad Shafi of Charalla, Mohammad Shafi (60), son of Mohammada Ganai Amrithgarh, Sunehlata Devi (30), daughter of Bhagat Ram of Sumie, Kamaldeep Singh (19), son of Bhagat Ram of Sumie, Noor Mohammad (55), son of Atta Mohammad of Dudwar, Naseema Begum (50), wife of Noor Mohammad of Dudwar, Mohammad Imran (20), son of Mohammad Ramzan of Kilothran, driver Liaqat Ali (32), son of Jaan Mohammad of Changa, Shafkat Ali (14), son of Abdul Rashid of Bisran, Fatima Begum (35), wife of Rehmatullah of Kilothran, Jabeena Begum (35), wife of Mohammad Amin of Huja Beoli, Nasreena (25), daughter of Mohammad Shafi of Amrithgarh, Sunil Kumar (21), son of Balwant Singh of Bunela, Ashiq Hussain (12), son of Rehmatullah of Thaloran, and Rajinder Singh (21), son of Basant Ram of Kota.
All the bodies were later handed over to legal heirs for last rites.
