Centre to provide 60 % funds for non-commercial sectors in state | Solar Water Heating | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 11: The state Energy Development Agency has finalised an ambitious plan on installing solar water heaters in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir which continues to face acute power shortage. The electricity problem in the state has been so severe that the PDD authorities have to resort to prolonged load shedding. official sources said that the Government of India has assured the state Government of its financial assistance for inst alli ng solar water heating systems for both commercial and domestic users. Sources said that the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, which is headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah, has evinced keen interest in helping people and institutions including various shrines and places of worship by setting up solar lights and solar water heating systems. Under the direction of the central Government the Ministry for New and Renewable Energy will fund the project of installing solar water heating systems in Jammu and Kashmir. As per the guidelines the Ministry will provide 60 per cent financial support for solar water heating system to be set up in non-commercial sectors and 30 per cent funding for the projects which were to be installed in the commercial sector. Government circles said that once solar water heating plants were established in various commercial and non-commercial areas it would lessen peoples' dependence on hydel power. In that case the state Government could afford to reduce its expenses on power purchase. These circles said that once the expenses on power purchase were reduced the same amount could be utilised on setting up mini and micro power plants in the state for increasing power generation which was the only way to tackle the gap between demand and availability of electricity.
