Justice for Jammu impossible under existing set-up, say people | Trifurcation The Only Way Out | | Neha JAMMU, Feb 11: The "NC would not appreciate the needs, aspirations and compulsions of the people of Jammu province because it is essentially a Kashmir-based and Kashmir-centric party". This is what an overwhelming majority of the people here in this grossly ignored and politically marginalised Jammu province believe. In fact, this majority believes that "no Kashmir-based party would ever dispense justice to the people of Jammu province because the Kashmiri leadership believes that their empowerment would not only mean an enormous loss to Kashmir, but would also mean the defeat of those who wish to give a particular type of orientation to everything in this province, which is opposed to the idea of the state getting independence, autonomy or self-rule". An overwhelming majority of the people not only wants the Kashmir-based political parties to "close down their political shops in Jammu province because they have destroyed them politically and economically", but also "wants the Congress and the BJP to stop playing with them and their sentiments". "These are national parties; their agendas are national in character and implications; they cannot afford to identify themselves with the people of Jammu province because they have to look after and cater to the needs of many a community in the rest of the country, besides the majority community in Kashmir". This is the view of most of the people. At is, however, true that they are more critical of the Congress than the BJP saying "it is the Congress which is squarely responsible for destruction and neglect of Jammu province as it has been ruling the state directly and indirectly since 1947". The truth, in short, is that they are not only fed up with the Kashmir-based parties and the Congress and the BJP, but they are also fed up with the existing politico-constitutional, administrative and economic structure. They say that the "existing system is unitary" and that "it only suits Kashmir because it is Kashmir which dominates the legislative assembly". Yes, the Jammu and Kashmir Constitution is unitary in character and spirit. It only caters to the needs of Kashmir, Kashmiri leadership and Kashmiri people. The critics of the existing system do make a point when they hold the existing system and the referred to political outfits responsible for their neglect and marginalization and suggest that "there is but one way in which they could obtain justice and exercise all rights available to other Indians and that is by severing their ties with Kashmir and Kashmiri leadership". "Trifurcation of the State", they say, "is the only solution to their age-old problem". No person with a positive and democratic outlook can find fault with this formulation because it is based on very solid facts. In fact, if there is any state in the country that needs to be reorganised forthwith, it is Jammu and Kashmir State. It is an unnatural formation and it consists of three disparate regions, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. |
