Peerzada to continue in cabinet | Just a storm in cup of tea | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 11: In a bizarre turn of events the State education Minister Peerzada Sayeed said he would continue to work as a soldier of the Congress party and also continue as a minister in the Jammu and Kashmir cabinet. Peerzada said he had submitted his resignation to the Congress President Sonia Gandhi who had rejected his resignation and told him to continue in the state cabinet. "I will do nothing to harm the interests of the party and I will continue to work for the development of the state", he told reporters here today. Speculations had run high that the future of Peerzada had come to an end after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met the senior Congress leaders in New Delhi conveying to them the findings of the crime branch probe into the alleged misconduct of Peerzada's son Imam Sauban who passed his secondary school exam in 2009. It has been reliably learnt that the crime branch probe has not made any comment on Peerzada's involvement in the facilitation of his son passing the secondary school exam. The crime branch probe has indicted six officials of BOSE for their alleged involvement in the facilitation of Imam Sauban passing the secondary school exam. Peerzada had surprised everybody by sending his resignation to New Delhi instead of sending it to the Chief Minister who is constitutionally the authority to decide on the resignation of a member from the council of ministers. The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah finally decided to steer clear of the controversy by maintaining that Peerzada had been divested of education portfolio, but would continue as the minister for Public Enterprises in the State. Omar Abdullah also said Peerzada could continue as a minister in his cabinet as long as he wished to. The bizarre turn of events has surprised everybody in the State. In all likelihood Peerzada would finally be cleared of the allegations leveled against him and he would continue to discharge his duties as a minister in the State cabinet. The entire development has perhaps finally boiled down to a storm in the tea cup. Developments like this have a far reaching fallout on the political discourse in the State. Days to come would reveal how seriously a development like this affects the balance of power in the NC-Congress coalition government. |
