Forces active in denting congress in J&K | | | During the last over two decades several political leaders have been held responsible for presiding over partial liquidation of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. Some leaders have been within the organisation and others from different parties. If one goes by the observation made by a couple of senior Congress leaders one has no other option but to believe that for a number of years Ghulam Nabi Azad has been responsible for diluting the strength and size of the party in Jammu and Kashmir. If he has been responsible for weakening the congress roots in the state he may have done so unwittingly. Azad is in fact a staunch congressite and he has been always interested in strengthening congress not only in his home state of Jammu and Kashmir but in other states as AICC general secretary and as a trusted man of Indira Gandhi and now of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. What seems to have lent credibility to those who hold Azad responsible for weakening the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir is the way he has been instrumental for groupism in the party. It has been seen that instead of strengthening the hands of those who have headed and who heads the PCC Azad had been partronising the dissidents. This phenomenon has been witnessed since 1990 with the result the successive PCC heads, including Ghulam Rasool Kar, Ch. Mohd.Aslam, Peerzada Mohd. Syeed, Mohd. Shafi Qureshi and Saif-ud-Din Soz, were not in a position to keep the congress flock together. There have been occasions when the Congress party presented a look of different power centres. This is well reflected in the party these days. There are two major factions in the Congress, one led by Soz and the other by Azad. Besides this there are other power centres in the state unit of the Congress. People like Taj Mohiuddin,Tara Chand, Abdul Gani Vakil,Mangat Ram Sharma have their groups of supporters in the organisation. Assuming that despite these power centres the Congress has remained invulnerable the reports about various types of irregularities having been committed by a number of party ministers including G.M.Saroori, Taj Mohiuddin, Peerzada Mohd. Syeed, Mula Ram and others, from time to time, have tarnished the image of the Congress. Apart from the damage caused to the party by elements wthin the Congress there have been people from outside the organisation that have caused erosion in the Congress strength. First damage to the party was caused by Mufti Mohd.Sayeed who quit the Congress in 1987 and joined the Jan Morcha. Majority of Congress leaders of consequence joined hands with the Mufti after he floated the PDP in 1999. Later by seeking its support at one time and later spurning it like a deadwood Farooq Abdullah too has been responsible for the plight of the Congress. Now it is Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, who has been eating into the vitals of the Congress by following the principle of divide and rule within the Congress circles. If Omar has owned Taj Mohiuddin and distanced himself from the PCC Chief, Saifuddin Soz, he is doing it with a purpose. The purpose being to widen the split between Taj and Soz. With continued support from the party high command Omar has been virtually leading the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. Of late he is trying to become a soothsayer, that too with the blessings of the Congress high command, but his prediction on the fate and future of Peerzada Mohd. Syeed proved incorrect. He had predicted that the Peerzada would be out of the cabinet within 24 to 36 hours and the Chief Minister proved wrong as Peerzada continues to be a cabinet Minister. Since he has failed to cause any dent in the PDP Omar has found it convenient to demolish the Congreess in the state which he has been doing. |
