Hindi play 'Damaad' staged at Natrang's Sunday Theatre | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 12: Balwant Gargi's famous Hindi play 'Damaad' staged here today at Natrang Studio Theatre under the direction of Neeraj Kant. Originally written in Punjabi, this intense dramatic story has been presented in many languages and forms all over the country. Sunday Theatre has been a wholesome bouquet of different genres of theatrical presentations since last seven years. The theme of the play revolves around a 'Baagi'- freedom fighter, Himmat Singh who knocks at the door of a family, which is waiting the arrival of their son-in-law. The pleas of the old woman not to give shelter are hypnotically transformed by the 'freedom fighter', who pleads that to keep the flame of freedom burning; she has to give refuge to him. He even reminds her that her husband had sacrificed his life for the cause of freedom. The lady is moved that she not only give shelter to the 'Baagi' (revolutionary) but makes him sit near her daughter to pose as her husband only to avoid the police from arresting him. The police came and thought the 'Baagi' to be the real son-in law, the police went away but kept a watch on the house. However, the 'Baagi' escapes after the police have left. Meanwhile, the real son-in-law arrives, his arrival charms everyone and there is a festivity in the house but suddenly every thing goes off with the entry of Police again. Here the lady of the house has no words to plead that their new guest is the real son-in-law. She pleads in vein and the Police pays no heed to it. The pathetic feelings of a lady, who has not only lost her husband but also sacrificed her "Damaad" for the cause of freedom, are aesthetically portrayed in the play. Neeraj Kant as Himmat Singh, Romilla Basnet as Nihal Kour, Balwinder Singh as Sarban Singh, Rahul Singh as Thanedaar, Sajra Qadir as Bachno and Pankaj Anand as Sipahi were all appreciated well by the audience for their superb performance. Uplaksh Singh Kotwal operated the lights of the play while Sachin Saini played music. |
