Khalsa Club lifts General Zorawar Hockey Trophy | | | early times report JAMMU, Feb 12: One of the top clubs of the state, Khalsa Club today lifted the silver jubilee 25th General Zorawar Singh Hockey Tournament title outplaying Kathua Club 6-5 in a well contested final played at K K Hakhu Stadium, here. It was the hat trick from Jagjeet Singh that infused spirit in the Khalsa camp, especially in the second half of the play. Jagjeet scored two of the four goals in the second half by winners Khalsa Club. The neck to neck title clash witnessed many ups and downs throughout the 60-minute game which ultimately went in favour of the experienced side of Khalsa Club. The winning goal came in the dying minutes of the game. Otherwise tied at 5-5, after Kathua Club made a great start by taking 2-0 lead in the beginning, Khalsa Club emerged triumphant when Kulwant Singh netted the ball I the 59th minute. Earlier, Kathua Club, playing with most of the players from Jammu, made a brilliant beginning and took a fine 2-0 lead in the first 20 minute play. Sikanderpal Singh converted a penalty corner into goal while Jagjeet Singh sounded the ball in 17th minute. However, Khalsa Club fought back and equalized the score but only to allow Kathua Club again made it 3-2 at the end of first half of the play. Sartaj Singh and Jagjeet Singh brought in equalizers in the 24th and 27th minute of the match respectively from Khalsa Club. Kathua Club again took the lead with Indpal Singh sounding the board in the 30th minute through a penalty corner. Entered into the second half with a new strategy to give Jagjeet Singh the chances of strike, Khalsa Club succeeded in their game plan. Jagjeet Singh converted two back to back well planned moves into goal in the 38th and 42nd minute and completed his hat trick. It was followed by two goals coming from Surinder Singh (50th) and Kulwant Singh (59th). From Kathua Club, Mandeep Singh and Janak Singh were the scorers who netted the ball in 45th and 53rd minute of the match respectively. The game was so close that it forced the players to commit mistakes and face umpires' wrath. Amarjeet Singh of Kathua Club and Takdeer Singh of Khalsa Club were shown yellow cards. The final was officiated by Surinder Pal Singh, Charnajeet Singh, Ram Singh, Dalbir Mehta and Daljeet Singh Bhatia. In the prize distribution function, Chief Sports Officer of the Sports Council, MS Baba was special guest who presented running winners' and runners-up trophies as also other individual prizes. This tournament was organised by Zorawar Club under the aegis of Hockey Jammu and Kashmir. |
