Difficult times ahead for coalition | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 12: The Congress High Command today shook the coalition government by refusing to accept Peerzada Sayed's resignation. He has been asked to continue. Peerzada resigned yesterday when Crime Branch found the charges of helping his foster son qualify the matriculation examination `correct'. Peerzada who held the Education portfolio had submitted his resignation to Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi. "Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is not my boss. Sonia Ji is", he told newsmen. Peerzada in his letter of resignation to the Cong high command had explained to senior Congress leadership that he is being selectively targeted by selective leaks in the media about allegations which had been found baseless by an internal inquiry a year back. The Congress High Command's decision has shocked the National Conference. Last month the Congress had extended Omar Abdullah's term for three years the opposition by local Congress leaders notwithstanding. Omar also evoked support in New Delhi during 2010 agitation especially after he challenged totality of accession. Political experts have viewed the development with keen interest. According to them, it is the beginning of the end of coalition rule in Jammu Kashmir. Omar must be in a dilemma. Peerzada continues to be a minister but has no portfolio. Rumors suggest that Peerzada may be given a portfolio after the budget session of the assembly. But can Congress High Command wait till then? The way High Command has behaved since last evening suggests that it wants to assert. Therefore, Omar will be forced to swallow some `bitter pills' in the coming days. The coalition is likely to be put to test. Which shape the development takes remains to be seen. |
