Governor inaugurates 4-day folk festival

JAMMU, Feb 13 : Describing Jammu and Kashmir as a blessed state in terms of history, language and culture governor NN Vohra said that showcasing the diverse culture of the state would go a long way in promoting better understanding between the state and its counterparts in other parts of India. He was speaking at the inaugural function of 4-day folk festival, which began at Abhinav theatre here on Monday.
Lauding the role of Academy of art, culture and languages in promoting sub regional identities of the state the governor said that as a cultural and literary institution the Academy can play an important role in fostering between understanding among the people of the state thereby promote national integration.
The governor was accompanied by first lady, Usha Vohra. Minister for tourism and culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora, minister of state for tourism and culture, Nasir Aslam Wani, and former secretary Academy and director Natrang, Balwant Thakur were also present on the occasion. Earlier in his speech minister for tourism and culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora said that the intention of holding events like folk festivals is to showcase the rich and diverse regional identities of the state.
Similar sentiments minister of state for tourism and culture, Nasir Aslam Wani said that the activities of Academy had picked up in the last two months and assured that more and more events would be held in the months ahead.
On the first day of the four day folk festival ten music and dance groups from all the three regions of the state showcased their talent.
The groups which performed today included Khem Raj and party, Ravi Sharma and party, Vishwanath Ratta and party, Sanjeev Shastri and party, Dhamali dance centre, Allah Rakha Chichi and party, Qazi Kashmir theatre, CD Magotra and party, Stanzin and party and Dhani Ram and party.
The programme proceedings were concluded by Mittali Gupta while additional secretaries, Shamima Akhter and Savita Bakshi presented the welcome address and vote of thanks respectively.
