If cooperation in liver transplant, why not in other fields? | | | If India and Pakistan join hands it may not only lead to peace and progress in the south Asian region but also result in major development in the field of science and technology. One such instance of friendship or cooperation between the Indian and the Pakistani surgeons was in the shape of successful live transplant carried out on two Pakistani patients, who had been admitted in a hospital in Lahore with complete liver failure. It was first ever liver transplant done in Pakistan. One need not give credit for the success of the liver plant eit her to the Indian surgeons or those from Pakistan. It is a success of cooperation between the Indian and Pakistani surgeons.Since liver transplant cases were being performed in different hospitals and medical colleges in various Indian states for the last several years Pakistani surgeons hit upon an idea of inviting surgeons from India for assisting them in carrying out the liver transplant. And a team of three Indian surgeons readily accepted the invitation and visited Lahore where they joined hands with their Pakistani counterparts for saving two lives. The Indian surgeons were warmly received and greeted and it was a rare sight to see relatives of the two patients having undergone liver transplant, thanking profusely the Indian doctors. Earlier, there have been series of instances in which a large number of patients from Pakistan received proper treatment, including liver and kidney transplant and heart surgery in various Indian hospitals and medical colleges.People in Pakistan and in other foreign countries prefer undergoing complicated surgeries in the Indian hospitals because of the cost factor. It has been seen that expenses even for complicated surgeries are much cheaper in India than in Pakistan and in the Gulf or in the west. That is one of the reasons for a heavy rush of nonIndian patients waiting for surgeries in hospitals in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Mumbai and Chennai. It is not only the cost factor but the relative experience the Indian surgeons and doctors have gained in treating patients suffering from severe ailments.Whether Indian technocrats or surgeons or physicians all of them have achieved excellence in the field of their activities and their counterparts in Pakistan too have achieved success in their profession. But lack of opportunities in India and Pakistan have forced these brilliant brains and talented surgeons and technocrats to settle in foreign lands in search of greener pastures. If the Pakistani surgeons have been assisted by the Indian surgeons in achieving success in carrying out liver transplant on two patients why cannot the two nations touch new heigths in the field of science and technology? Yes if the scientists, surgeons and technocrats of India and Pakistan cooperate in various disciplines nobody can prevent them from achieving success.Same can be true if the industrialists of the two nations cooperate the subcontinent can become an important exporter of not only consumer goods but of other gadgets and multipurpose machines. If farmers of India and Pakistan join hands the subcontinent is sure to witness fresh green revolution . One thing is certain. If the trust deficit between the two sides is reduced and both sides agree to cooperate in different development activities neither India nor Pakistan will have to bank on imports from the developed nations. On can easily imagine the extent of loss Pakistan has been facing annually when it has no other option but to import as many as 6,000 items from various countries. If the two countries are faced with financial difficulties bilateral hostility is the main factor responsible for it. Once the two live in peace their annual budgetary allocations on defence would have to be reduced leaving sufficient money for various development sectors.Let the politicians in Pakistan learn a lesson or two from the liver transplant incident and allow peace a chance. |
