Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 11: Teaching faculty of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGBSU) is up in arms against the university administration for not meeting their long pending demands. They observed one day pen down strike today.
Sources said that the administration did not allow the news of strike to become public by disallowing media inside the campus. They added that faculty members working in the university are annoyed over the manner in which their genuine agreed demands are being ignored and they are being made to suffer.
Irked over whimsical attitude of university administration, sources said that prevailing circumstances forced more than dozen faculty members to leave their jobs and join other professions. Despite several reminders and requests, sources said that university administration preferred not to resolve the pending issues and remained mute spectators to the deteriorating situation in the university.
Due to strike, sources said that classes wore gave deserted look as all the faculty members boycotted lectures and practical work. They maintained that teaching fraternity observed one day pen down strike under the banner of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Teachers Association (BGSBUTA).
The association leaders said that since the formation of BGSBUTA, they have written to the administration for recognition of their body and redressal of problems of the teaching community several times but to no avail. A leader of the association said that the university administration has only procrastinated issues but never bothered to respond to any of the communication from the last nine months.
He added that administration is acting shortsightedly by resorting to dilatory tactics. "Teaching fraternity feels suffocated and so far many teachers have left the university even for jobs like JE, plus two and college lecturers' in the state. Many departments in University are facing shortage of faculty but administration does not bother to fulfill the needs," he added saying that this is directly affecting quality of education because of the over burdening of the left over faculty.
Teachers feel that administration does not want to create congenial academic atmosphere in the university, added a faculty member. Despite bad weather, sources said that teachers pledged to continue their struggle. They also said that they will approach the Chancellor of the University, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and apprise him of deteriorating situation in the university.
The meeting concluded successfully with a general body meeting of the association which was held in the university. It was unanimously resolved that a week's time shall be given to the university administration for addressing genuine issues of BGSBUTA as already conveyed to them, prime among them being recognition of BGSBUTA, failing which the teachers will go on an indefinite strike from February 21, 2012 till their demands are not met.
