Srinagar, Feb 14: The Srinagar -Jammu highway remained closed for second day on Tuesday due to accumulation of more than two feet snow along the highway. However, weather improved in the valley after a small spell of snowfall in the morning.
Due to continued snowfall throughout the night about 18 to 24 inches of snow had got accumulated on the Srinagar-Jammu National highway, the officials said. Besides five snow avalanches of heavy to moderate sizes also got triggered between Panthal slide to Jawahar Tunnel.
The Border road organization today started the clearance of road vigorously. According to the officials the road is expected to open on Wednesday.
Around 45 load carriers had got stranded near Shaitani Nala area, about two Kms short of South Portal of Jawahar Tunnel. Three Light Motor Vehicles had also got stranded and could not move forward therefore the drivers of these vehicles were evacuated and given shelter for the night, said the officials.
Fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions led to the closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. The chief engineer of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Brigadier T.P.S. Rawat said that fresh snowfall in the Banihal and Patnitop during the night led to the road becoming slippery. "The highway has been closed for vehicular traffic to ensure passenger safety. Road clearance operations are going on and we will review the situation as soon as the weather improves," he said.
Meanwhile, a medium danger avalanche warning still exists for higher reaches of Banihal, Gulmarg, Chowkibal, Tangdhar, Keran, Machil, Gurez, Gagangir, Sonamarg, Drass and Zojila areas, the official spokesman said.
The people living in these areas were advised to exercise caution, in avalanche prone areas.
