Peace for revival of film shooting in Kashmir
2/14/2012 11:44:55 PM
Filmworld super star,Aamir Khan, has
hoped that the Bollywood restart shoot
ing in the Kashmir valley which is dotted with rare scenic areas that could be the most suitable spot for the films.Aamir has given vent to his urge for seeing filmmakers to start shooting in the Kashmir valley which used to attract scores of people from the Bollywood prior to the rise of militancy related violence.Aamir is the right man to remember the success his uncle,Nasir Hussain, had received by shooting most of his films in the Kashmir valley.Nasir Hussain had made romantic movies for which there could have been no better location than Kashmir.Whatever benefits the filmmakers had from shooting in Kashmir a large segment of people within the scenic valley were profitted directly and indirectly. It has been seen that for shooting a few scenes and shots in the Kashmir valley the filmmakers used to get a team of more than 50 people from Mumbai besides the actors. This would help houseboat owners and hotliers in earning a fortune after all those connected with the film making had to stay in Kashmir for 10 days to one month.Invariably the filmmakers used to select hilly spots and even distant verdent slopes which would allow ponywallas and porters to earn money.Apart from financial gains to the local people shooting for films in Kashmir would introduce new scenic spots in the valley to millions of cinegoers in the country.
Unfortunately the Pakistan sponsored insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir affected various sectors that included the sector of film shooting in Kashmir. For more than two decades the valley remained out of bounds for the filmmakers because of violence. The filmmakers were scared of the activities of militants after they learnt that the Jehadis had ordered closure of all cinema theatres in the valley. After cable operators opened their shops these very Jihadis were quick in banning telecasting of Bollywood films. This way there was no safety for the people from Bollywood if they visited Kashmir for film shooting.Rough estimates reveal that if prior to the rise of militancy related violence in 1989 shooting for 10 to 15 films used to be carried out in Kashmir per year brief shooting for not more than four films could be done during the last 20 years. This itself indicated the size of loss the state Government and the people of Kashmir suffered.Till two decades ago more than 80 per cent films were based on shooting in Kashmir and in certain cases the filmmakers would prefer to have all the shots from Kashmir included in their films because the panoramic view of the valley used to sell.
In fact filmmakers made up for whatever they had lost after Kashmir had become out of bounds for them by shooting in several foreign countries. It proved a costly affair for the filmmakers but there was no other alternative because the chances of restoration of normalcy to the valley seemed bleak till seven years ago.Whether as a result of sustained counter insurgency operations launched by the security forcs or on account of change of heart in people, especially those who used to support terrorists and Jihadis the security scenario in the state has improved. This has started reviving hope among filmmakers for restarting shooting in Kashmir.People in Kashmir need to encourage filmmakers wishing to start shooting for their films which could help the Kashmiris to make up for the financial losses they had suffered because of militancy related violence. It is the people in Kashmir who have to ensure safety and hassle free stay of filmmakers during their stay in Kashmir. It is the duty of the Government to improve its governance in order to reduce the chances for revival of civilian strife of the type that was witnessed in the summer of 2010.In addition to this the Government needs to assist the filmmakers in shooting scenes in unexplored and virgin spots in the valley. It can be possible if the basic infrastructure in the shape of suitable road connectivity, lodge and board facilities were developed.
