Choking Samba's respiration in the name of industrial growth | | | Neeraj Badyal
Jammu Feb 15: Haphazard and random setting up of industries in Samba may be a boon for the unemployed youths as it is seen as 'generating employment' on the other hand the rapid expansion of the industries is also causing a severe damage to the surrounding environment. The newly established industrial area in newly formed district Samba developed with the help and supervision of State Industrial Development Corporation (SIDCO). This industrial area consists of two phases, Phase I and II having almost 250 factories of different industries mostly dealing with the hazardous chemicals. According to sources within the said department the authorities are planning to develop Phase III also and the waste cum hazardous seepage will flow to the local river Basantar. "This industrial area is polluting the air and water of the area. The river Basantar is dying because of constant flow of waste materials coming from the industries without any check, h said. It is to mention the water of the river is used for agricultural purposes by the local farmers and also providing water to the cattle of the farmers. According to some reports as appeared in Hindi dailies the soil is growing infertile rapidly while animals are dying by constant intake of the polluted water. One of trade union leader on the condition of anonymity maintained that the administration is not taking step on erring factories allegedly with the connivance of the law enforcing agencies. Meanwhile student Leader Kusum Khajuria said owners of the industries who happen to be outsider are exploiting labourers by employing them on contract. The locals of samba also warned the govt against the haphazard mushrooming of industrial sector and threaten to public stir against industries if govt fails to take precautionary steps. |
