6-months to sack officials but just 6-days for minister...? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 15: The sacking of 13 'corrupt' officials by the government has underscored one important thing: the definition of corruption is lopsided and action depends on the whims and fancies of government headed by the Omar Abdullah. The government took about six-month to complete formalities in sacking official while in about six-day after the submitting of report, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed was divested of his portfolio by the Chief Minister. The action with regard to the minister was taken when the report hasn't been made public and even by the admission of Omar Abdullah there was not direct indictment of Peerzada in the report. Peerzada had also claimed that he was not indicted in the report and had even termed the inquiry not im-partial. Not a single sacked official was holding administrative post. None of them was even KAS leave alone IAS. The action to sack officials was taken on a report finalised by the Chief Secretary. The government had indicated that action against more officers is likely to take place soon. The government decision to sack officials was aimed at giving an impression that J&K , dubbed as second most corrupt State by Transparency International, will act tough against the menance of 'corruption'. The point missed by the government is that action could have been seen credible only if top officials had been sacked. The total cadre strength of IAS officers is 178. In addition to it 427 KAS officers are serving the government. The administrative decisions are controlled and manevouered by these about 600 officials more so by the IAS. Serious allegations of corruptions have been leveled against senior bureaucrats in the past also. The government had in tune with it customary 'lips service' had promised action which still had to see the light of the day. Even though the State government can't sack IAS officials on its own but it can make recommendation for the same to the President which can't be dismissed. The divesting of portfolio of Peerzada and sacking of just six gazetted officials only point to the fact that the actions were aimed at settelling scores and building perception about 'honesty' of the government rather than from strong will against corruption. |
