SIM cards misused to commit crime: Police | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 16 : Reacting on media reports that mobile recharge providers have threatened to stop the services citing certain directives from the Police to furnish details of their customers, Police Thursday claimed there were instances where in the SIM cards, have been misused to commit crimes, which included creating panic among the general public. A police spokesperson quoted few cases. "Case FIR 83/2009 U/S 505 RPC. On 01-04-2009 P/S Sadder received information that some unknown miscreants has flashed an SMS among the public about baseless incident that fidayeen have attacked Airport, which created panic in the area. Case FIR No:122/2009 12.05.2009. One Mohammad Amin Bhat S/o Abdul Majid R/O Fair Bank Colony Rawalpora lodged a written report in P/S Sadder to the effect that on 05.05.2009 his in-laws received a phone call at 8.30 PM on their residential land line No.2433797 from unknown persons," he said. "Case FIIR No.172/2009,U/S 505, 149, 341, 336,427/RPC 02-07-2009, Police station Sadder acting on some reliable information received by P/S that subscriber, has communicated an SMS to the people expressing killing of two children by a Police Vehicle and the people set ablaze the Police vehicle. The baseless SMS results provocation to public and on reacting an unruly mob came out from Barzulla and pelted stones upon the vehicular traffic causing unnecessary in convenience to the general public," he added. The police spokesperson claimed there was reliable information that the distributors of telecom companies were providing SIM Cards to the people on fake documents by hatching criminal conspiracy. "Such SIM cards are being used by militants in the Valley," he said. "The misuse of SIM Cards by the militants is well known. Details regarding misuse of SIM Cards in other districts are being collected. It needs to be mentioned here that a meeting of these Recharge providers was held with the senior Police officers where in they were advised to keep proper records of the customers who recharge their SIM Cards from them. They were also advised to mail the details of such customers after every fortnight," he added. |
