BJP senior citizens cell brief plight of elders to CM | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 16: BJP senior citizens cell state convenor Kuldeep Raj Gupta, who called on the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in his official chamber at civil secretariat, Jammu, briefed about the plight of the people who have crossed 60 years of life and are an important part of the society. Gupta told the CM that in the present days of fast and so called modern life style, the senior citizens are being ignored even by their own ones as a result of which they have been made to suffer at an age when they need the most attention, care and affection. He said that as per the census of 2001, the strength of senior citizens in the country was nearly 11.5 crores. Since the longevity of life of average Indian has increased, and the census of India, as per 2011, has shown the strength of India population as 121 crores, the strength of senior citizens has touched nearly 15 crores. Majority of these senior citizens comprises of middle class people. It consists of retired civil servants, police officials, ex-serviceman and retired personal from banking, insurance and private commercial and industrial houses. Gupta also handed over a memorandum as mentioned below about the plight and genuine demands of senior citizens that demand security of elderly couples. The next most requirement of the senior citizen was health care which should be free for poor and BPL families. Priority should be given to senior citizen and government and private hospital. For this they may be provided a called of different colors and have a separate queue. Medical insurance it is allowed for person up to 60 years which should be extended to 75 yrs, as life expectancy has increase. The also demanded the minimum pension of Rs. 1000/-pm should allowed for all the senior citizen thoughout the country, since the prices of all essential commodities have increased by far. Senior citizens beyond 60yrs of age may be given 50 percent concession for their travel by rail, buses and also for an air-travel. The also demanded as per government instruction banks are given 0.50% higher interest to the senior citizen for their bank deposits, which may be increased to 2%. Besides, taking up the cause of senior citizens, Kuldeep Raj Gupta also expressed concern over ousting of fourth class employees engaged as laboratory assistants and library assistants in the year 1999 adding that after the court orders those from Kashmir and other districts of Jammu except Rajouri and Poonch were re-engaged, which is injustice with the people of twin border districts. |
