Paradigm shift in separatists' policy
2/17/2012 12:51:54 AM
Bashir Assad
srinagar, Feb 16: In what can be termed as a paradigm shift in their policy of separation, the separatists have finally started realizing the paramount importance of economy in shaping the future discourse of politics in Jammu and Kashmir, Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday inaugurated a shopping complex in old city Srinagar built by M/S Teerath Ram and Company.
Though soon after the summer unrest of 2010 Mirwaiz started raising the issues pertaining to the day to day life of people in Kashmir and asserted that economic self reliance was as important as political independence and at many times echoed his concern on exploitation of water resources in J&K by National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) and even threatened to launch an agitation if the state government shows lukewarm response to the increasing public opinion about the issue, however the hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani while admitting the failure of the "2010 public movement" also showed some sort of shift from his political posturing by realising the mood of the general public after 2010.
Sources privy to Mirwaiz told this newspaper that redefining the movement for political emancipation for the people of Kashmir and moving forward in tandem with all the issues which somehow impact rather shape the public opinion has become imperative for political survival. Elaborating his point he said that in conflict zone like Kashmir the agendas are to be shaped in lieu to the general public opinion which has shown an alarming shift from emotional politics to practical one.
In this context for last one year or so Mirwaiz camp particularly Professor Ab. Gani Bhat, Agha Syed Hassan and Bilal Gani Lone seem to be cautious of the fact that the resolution of the political disputes around the globe in today's context was not possible along political lines in fact the world order is being shaped through economic liberalization and it is the political economy that finally determines the interest of the nations in resolving the political issues.
If Professor Ab. Gani Bhat's latest assertion that all political forces (main stream and separatists) should put a united phase and agree on common grounds if the long pending Kashmir issue is to be resolved, is an indication, Mirwaiz's inauguration of a shopping Mall today shall not be seen in isolation to what is shaping the political discourse in Kashmir.
Actually what political watchers observe is that the political posturing can never be permanent as it is always in conformity with the circumstances and the situations that emerge and political wisdom demands magnanimity to face the challenges that the situations through.
Immaterial whether Mirwaiz and Professor Bhat have sought approval for such a posturing from across the border, the fact remains that redefining the movement and revisiting the agenda is something that the political discourse in Kashmir certainly deserves. Observers also believe that short term measures from the government side and dragging the emotive issues on part of separatist leadership has very little scope in today's world order what is required is a way out of the boggy of emotional politics to a well defined comprehensive and correlated political economy which can be as accommodative as the political rivals desire.
However if all the sermons of 2012 which Mirwaiz Umar Farooq delivered in the historic Jamia Masjid and all the controversial statements issued by Professor Bhat including the one in which he has suggested trifurcation of the state, are analysed with open mind a new strategy comes into fore that is the politics of which is called politics of commons and in the politics of commons rats marry snakes and bulls chase lizards.
