MAM men bag overall trophy, PG women retain title | 39th Annual Inter-college Athletics Meet concludes | |

JAMMU, Feb 17: Government MAM College lifted the men overall championship trophy while women athletes of Post Graduate (PG) Departments retained the title in the three-day 39th annual inter-college athletics meet of University of Jammu which concluded today on the campus, here. To emerge as champion, MAM College secured highest 53 points while overall runners-up, PG Departments obtained 50 points out of different field and track events. However, in women's category, PG Departments hardly had any competition for the championship after secured 57 points leaving GCW Kathua far behind with 28 points for second spot. On the basis of their performance, two women athletes shared coveted best athlete title. Mamta Sharma of PG Departments and Mandeep Kour of Trikuta Degree College were named best athletes. While Mamta secured first position in javelin throw, long jump and 800 meters race, Mandeep Kour bagged gold medals in track events of 100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters races. In men's section, there was hardly any best athlete considering their achievements.Earlier, men's sprint gold went to Baljeet Singh of MAM College while Ankush Saini of GDC Kathua and Karan Singh of New Modern College remained second and third respectively. On the other hand, Mandeep Kour of Trikuta Degree College bagged gold in women's section. She was followed by Monika Chalotra of PG Departments and Bindu Poonia of GCW Kathua for second and third place respectively. WOMEN: 4x100 meters Relay: PG Departments (Mamta, Monika, Priyanka, Manisha), Ist; GCW Kathua (Neetu, Preeti, Suraksha, Bindu), 2nd and GCW Parade (Pooja, Khatoon, Mitali, Aarti), 3rd. In the finals of selected track events and valedictory function, Minister for Higher Education, Abdul Gani Malik was chief guest, who gave away winners and runners-up trophies as also other individual prizes. Vice Chancellor, Prof MPS Ishar and Additional Director General of Police, Armed, Law and Order, K Rajendra Kumar, Principals of participating colleges, senior professors of university and officials of the host Department of Sports and Physical Education were among those present. GCW Gandhi Nagar fails to report Meanwhile, for the first time recent times, one of the prominent colleges of the city, Government College for Women (GCW), Gandhi Nagar failed to participate in the annual athletics meet. However, on the valedictory function, Physical Training Instructor (PTI) of the College, Sumnesh Sharma did come to receive the trophies on behalf of the students.
