Fate of BJP in Jammu hangs in balance | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 17: Will the seven BJP MLAs, who have been expelled from the party for defying the whip by indulging in cross voting during April last legislative Council election, form a separate political party or merge with either the Congress or the National Conference ? If sources close to the expelled BJP MLAs are to be believed the seven members of the Assembly had no idea of joining either the Congress or the National Conference. The sources said that first of all the expelled MLAs will contest the party decision in the court and before the speaker of the Assembly. In case they lost the battle they will be forming a separate political party. That decision would be taken after the BJP high command refused to take them back in the party. BJP circles said that the possibilities for allowing the expelled MLAs to rejoin the party were remote because besides having defied the BJP whip they had been maligning the name of the organisation to which they had belonged and which had helped them to get elected to the Assembly. Reports said that some prominent BJP supporters were trying to bring out reconciliation between the party high command and the seven MLAs but so far these attempts have not materialised after the MLAs refused to apologise. At one stage the party high command had decided to withdraw suspension of the MLAs in case they expressed regrets but none was prepared to apologise. The supporters trying to mediate between the expelled MLAs and the BJP high command have informed top functionaries of the party that in case the seven MLAs were forced to form a separate political organisation after the speaker or the court did not find them liable for disqualification, these MLAs could create problems for the organisation in Jammu. Reports said that once the seven MLAs formed a separate organisation they could cause major erosion in the BJP areas of influence after they receive covert or overt support from either the National Conference or the Congress. This way the future of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to hang in the balance if the dissidents flat a new organisation. |
