Sham asks farmers to adopt horti activities for dignified livelihood | One-day mega farmers' awareness camp held at village Nud | | Early Times Report
Akhnoor, Feb 17: Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma today called for promoting horticulture & floriculture sectors in a big way with the active involvement of farmers. He stressed the need for bringing maximum area under horticulture cultivation in the potential areas to give boost to this sector. Speaking at a one-day farmers' awareness programme organized by the horticulture department at village Nud in Akhnoor, the Minister said that in Jammu division there is great potential of these two sectors and Government will make all out efforts to tab the same. He emphasized the need for creating massive awareness amongst the farmers about the potential and incentives of various centrally sponsored schemes.Maintaining that horticulture and floriculture hold key factor for improving the GDP growth rate and socio-economic status of State, he asked the officers to utilize the potential in the uncovered areas and motivate the famers to adopt these activities instead of traditional crops. He said Government has already taken several measures to encourage the farmers, especially the youth to adopt the commercial floriculture and horticulture for their dignified livelihood. He appealed the youth to come forward and avail the benefits of these schemes and help in tackling the employment problem. The Minister apprised that with the earnest efforts of the officers and introducing new mechanism to promote State's products, the department has achieved a new record of Rs. 4000 crore turn over under horticulture sector this year. He said the department infused fresh energy in its functioning and entered new markets, like Himachal Pradesh, Bangladesh, West Bengal which gave encouraging results. He hoped that during the next year the Government has been planning to introduce some fresh initiatives to compete at the global level to showcase the State's products. He further said that people are showing great interest in floriculture sector and during the current year the State has despatched its products to other adjoining States like Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. To further promote this sector, the Government has kept provision of separate flower markets one each at Srinagar and Jammu for the disposal of farmers' products. The Minister distributed Rs. 30.32 lakh amongst 454 beneficiaries of Akhnoor and Khour blocks as incentives under horticulture promotion schemes. He asked the farmers to switch over to Aloevera, Marigold and herbal cultivation which have great demand in the market and Government provides attractive incentives. He apprised that under the Micro/Drip Irrigation Scheme Government provides 90 per cent subsidy. |
