Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 17: The Supreme Court has fixed a petition on National Conference (NC) worker, Haji Yusuf's alleged custodial killing on July 20. The petition has been filed by Panthers Party MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia seeking CBI inquiry into the mysterious death.
Yusuf, it may be mentioned died in the custody of Crime Branch oin September 29 last year. He was picked up from the residence of Chief Minister where he had gone to fix an alleged `money deal'.
Meanwhile the State Legal Aid Committee has decided to move contempt application against some newspapers of Jammu Kashmir for having misreported the Supreme Court Order dated February 3. The newspapers had reported that the apex court had rejected petitioner's plea to stay proceedings of Bedi's Commission vis-à-vis Yusuf Haji's case. This false story was floated at the behest of Government of J&K through a reputed news agency of the country.
Professor Bhim Singh, Senior Advocate appearing for the petitioner had urged the Court to expedite the hearing. The Supreme Court had made the following order, "Seen the Office Report dated February 1. Now that the matter has been restored, let it be listed for final disposal."
This was the order issued by the Division Bench comprising Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar on February 3. The vested interests had provided a concocted story to the local press to give a wrong signal to the people of J&K, in particular, about the real facts.
