2/18/2012 11:05:44 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 18: Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Suchetgarh assembly constituency Shyam Choudhary has once again demanded immediate compensation to the farmers of R.S. Pura tehsil who suffered loss of their crops in 2010 due to heavy hailstorms. Shyam Choudhary while interacting with the farmers of different villages of Suchetgarh assembly constituency during his day long tour on Saturday, said that the farmers are totally dependent on their crop harvest.
Their survival depends on what they sow and harvest.
He said that while many a times natural calamities damage their crops, non availability of seeds, fertilizers and water for irrigation on time too causes loss of crops.
He said that it was in the year 2010 that more than 34,000 kanals of agricultural land with standing crops were badly hit by heavy hailstorms. The farmers were assured of adequate compensation but today even after two years of the incident, the affected people have not been given even a single penny.
Shyam Chodhary said that after repeated representations and protests, the revenue department undertook the exercise to distribute cheques as compensation but it remained confined to just 2-3 selected villages and the exercise has been brought to halt for the reasons best known to the concerned department. He said the compensation released in favour of the farmers of 3 villages is rupees 200 per kanal, which is very less in these days of sky rocketing price rise and joke with the poor farmers. Demanding an increase in the amount of compensation and immediate distribution among the affected farmers of whole of R.S.Pura tehsil without any compensation Shyam Choudhary warned the coalition government, revenue department in particular, not to test the patience of the same and fulfill its commitment of adequate compensation.
Shyam Choudhary also demanded exemption of the pending electricity bills of the farmers adding that due to non release of irrigational water through canals, the farmers were forced to install water pumping motors in their fields to lift water from underground and save their crops from being getting damaged.
In order purchase these farmers had to seek loans/ borrow money on interests, which caused them financial burden.
Hence, the farmers who are still under this financial burden should be exempted from paying their pending electricity dues.
